The intervention was performed on the Smooth Adductor Channel, an important elevated hydraulic infrastructure that conveys water from the Liscia reservoir to the water distribution network of Gallura and the city of Olbia. The canal, made of reinforced concrete and supported by a series of piers and spans, has elevated sections that run at a considerable height above the ground to ensure the continuity of the flow and the crossing of valley areas.
The managing body granted a limited operational interval of 5 hours, during which it was possible to carry out the first structural rehabilitation work. During this time window, work was concentrated inside the elevated canal, at the connection joints with pile heads, critical points where the watertightness was compromised and could no longer be guaranteed.
A’manual hydroscarification targeted at joint points, with the aim of removing deteriorated concrete and release the reinforcement bars, and then thoroughly cleaned. After checking the state of preservation of the reinforcements, any additional metal reinforcements, and the sections were rebuilt with specific waterproof and water-resistant mortars.
In parallel, a internal channel mapping to precisely identify further areas that needed consolidation. Once the internal restoration was complete, the exterior was proceeded with a complete hydroscarification of the entire elevated structure, comprising piers, spans and side rails, followed by the surface redevelopment with water-repellent protective mortar.
The overall objective of the intervention was to restore the hydraulic seal of the canal and prevent water leakage, safeguarding the durability of the infrastructure and preventing further degradation due to seepage and erosion cycles.
