Native Parish of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Diocese of Como)
Valmalenco, Sondrio
The aim of the intervention was to consolidate, secure and restore the Churchyard Chapel, part of the parish church in the municipality of Torre Santa Maria, preserving its structural integrity and historical value.
The work involved, as a first step, bracing and the locking of the chapel by means of metal carpentry. Subsequently, the positioning of steel tie rods anchored to the already prepared ballast blocks definitively stabilised the structure during all operational phases.
Next, the perimeter was excavated, completely freeing the foundation to allow work to be carried out on the entire base, composed of stone and lime mortar. Once the surface emerged, a hydro-wash was carried out to remove residues and impurities, followed by the laying of a rendering with contrasting mortars up to the level of the stone. Next, holes were drilled, half the depth of the foundation width, for the insertion of the injector pipes. Through the injector pipes were injected specific mortars, ensuring complete filling of the cavities and total saturation of the foundation.
A niche was created in the consolidated foundation by means of parallel cuts, necessary for the insertion of a girder and hydraulic jacks. The latter, appropriately calibrated, allowed for the lifting and correct positioning of the chapel, bringing it perfectly back on axis, after the collapse of the foundation had caused it to tilt.
On completion of the work, the perimeter arrangements, the filling of the excavations with draining gravel and the reconstruction of the side walls were carried out. The intervention ensured the structural consolidation, securing and conservative restoration of the Chapel of the Sacristy, preserving its integrity and enhancing its historical value.
